Video file converters?

how and were can i find a free download video converter. i have a movie i downloaded from ares and i put it on a dvd and it dont work so i asked and the store guy said i need to convert my file?? so can anyone help me through this problem ?? please i love this movie and i want to share it wih my famliy on thanksgiving!!!
